Horse McDonald in Careful...

Date: 30th Mar 2017

Location: Theatre

Time: 19:30

The world premiere of Scottish singer-songwriter Horse McDonald’s autobiographical play, Careful - an inspirational story of her triumph over adversity through music.

Horse McDonald

There are times in life when you need to be careful...

Growing up gay in Lanark in the ‘70s; when the reward is half a pack of fruit pastilles; when the lady on the train tells you about the doctor you should meet. These would be some of those times, but you'll always be saved if you use your voice. Horse takes us on a journey from kelpie in the Brownies to one of Scotland's most celebrated singers and through those times when she had to be...Careful.

Written by Lynn Ferguson and directed by Maggie Kinloch, Careful is Horse McDonald’s spellbinding debut play. The second half of the evening takes the form of a live audience Q&A with Horse and Maggie Kinloch and a mini set of her greatest hits, performed by Horse.

Recommended for ages 14 plus.

Royal Opera House Live - The Royal Opera: Madama Butterfly

Date: 30th Mar 2017

Location: Venue 1

Time: 19:15 - 22:00

Antonio Pappano conducts an impressive cast led by Ermonela Jaho in Puccini’s deeply poignant opera.

Madama Butterfly

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular of all operas, with ravishing music and a heartbreaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden, in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier's stunningly beautiful production.

The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists' romanticized views of Japan. Puccini's music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young, innocent bride. Well known moments include the impassioned aria ‘Un bel dì’ (One fine day) as the abandoned Cio-Cio-San clings vainly to her dreams.

Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano, acclaimed for his interpretations of Italian opera, conducts this intense and gripping journey from light and excitement to darkness and self-sacrifice.

Approximate running time 2 hrs 45 mins, including one interval.
Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
