New Trustee appointments announced at The Brunton

Published: Monday 9th October 2017

Sarah Allen, Karen Carlton and Steve Sadler have been appointed as new Trustees to the Board of the Brunton Theatre Trust.

The Brunton Theatre opened in the mid 1970’s and has established itself as a key middle scale venue within Scotland, viewed as East Lothian’s flagship performing arts venue. It strives to provide the highest quality drama, dance, music, theatre for children and young people, film and comedy. An education and outreach programme links many performances with participatory activities for local schools and communities. With strong roots in the local community it supports an active amateur performing arts scene. The Brunton Theatre Trust was established in 1994 and is a registered Scottish Charity, which receives funding from East Lothian Council and Creative Scotland in order to present the annual programme of work at the theatre.

Sarah Allen is the Director of Membership & Communications at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a membership-led organisation which represents some 25,000 surgical and healthcare professionals globally. Sarah is passionate about the opportunities for development that involvement in the arts can bring, having been involved in many art forms from an early age. This has included teaching drama, dance and music; a wide range of backstage roles; management and administration of a successful Youth Theatre company; producing; directing; and performing.

Karen Carlton has a background in human resource management and development and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She has run her own consultancy business since 2000 and has undertaken consultancy work with a wide range of Scottish Charities. Karen served as a member of the Board of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland for seven years and has worked with various organisations as a non-executive director and as a Trustee; current appointments are with the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Karen values The Brunton’s educational and outreach activities as a vital vehicle for community engagement and inclusion and is looking forward to supporting these activities as well as contributing to the work of the Trust.

Steve Sadler is the owner of Intimation Creative, a marketing and design agency; Rubber Lips PR, a PR and social media agency; Ex Aere Media, a video and motion graphics firm and Counterclockwise Creative, a digital marketing and digital asset management company. Steve is also a marketing consultant for East Lothian Council’s Business Gateway and has recently been awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (FCIM). Steve is a passionate supporter of the importance of “any sort of theatre training or activity, particularly for younger people, in helping to build confidence, develop self-esteem, engage in a team environment and in just having a bit of fun!”. Steve is heavily involved in a number of amateur theatre groups, taking roles in musicals, panto and drama productions.

Michael Stitt, chair of the Brunton Theatre Trust, welcomes the new Trustees:

"We are delighted to announce these appointments. We were looking for a blend of expertise and knowledge to complement our current Trustees. Sarah, Karen and Steve bring a wealth of experience which will support the Board to build on the Theatre’s existing success and to bring its work to new audiences and new generations."
